Chicago’s 2020 Theatrical Season

Written By: Jessie White

American actor and producer Michael Douglas once said, “Hollywood is hype. New York is talk. Chicago is work.” The hundreds of performers and thespians that have moved to the city with dreams of gracing the Chicago stages packed in their luggage are going to agree wholeheartedly. If you’re a fan of dinner and a show, you should really be checking out the restaurants in Chicago as the Windy City has performances for everyone. With comedy sets, pre-broadway previews, and national tours making annual rounds: Chicago is rich with artistic indulgences and some of the best performances you’ll see in your lifetime.

The Chicago theatre season is rare to disappoint, with a yearly blend of modern and classical works as well as diverse and alternative stories for audiences. Many shows that are destined for New York City’s Broadway first perform shows in Chicago such as Spamalot, Kinky Boots, Big Fish, The Producers, and more. Not only do the most successful stand up comedians make sure they perform in Chicago, but many of them began their careers in Chicago as well at The Second City, iO, or one of the thousand open mics all over the city.

So if you catch yourself in Chicago this year, check out what’s performing downtown or near your hotel. You’re guaranteed to find a show that you like, simply from the list of musicals that we chose to highlight below. Whether you’re a fan of musicals, improv, or crime dramas you are likely to leave any Chicago theatre happy.
