ShamROCK Chicago

ShamROCK Chicago

Chicago is home to some of the most widely-celebrated St. Patrick’s Day festivities in the United States. And this year, from Mar 16 – Mar 17, the city will pay homage to its deep Irish roots with glowing green buildings, a bright green Chicago River, three Irish parades and festive races. After your weekend stay in the Windy City, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Chicago is dubbed the “GREENest City in the World.”

Dyeing the Chicago River

Each year, the St. Paddy’s Day festivities kick off with the dyeing of the Chicago River. And this March, the river dyeing will begin on Saturday, Mar 16 at 9 a.m. How does it happen? Members from the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union set off on the river in a few different boats. The larger of the boats dumps about 40 pounds of a mysterious (yet eco-friendly) orange powder into the river via a massive flour sifter. The smaller boats then work to spread the color around and in 45 minutes, voila– bright green river. For the best view of the river GREENing, stand at the intersection of Michigan Ave, Wacker Drive and the river. Can’t make it by 9 a.m.? No problem! The river usually stays green for up to a few days. So, picture ops post-St. Paddy’s Day crowds are definitely possible.

Not One, But Three Parades

Immediately following the Chicago River dyeing, you’ll want to head downtown for the city’s annual Downtown parade. It will kick off at noon and march north on Columbus Drive from Balbo to Monroe. Rain or shine, expect three hours of colorful floats, Irish step dancers, bands and lots of bagpipers. This year’s theme? “The Music of Ireland.” Although the Downtown parade is the largest, you can still catch two other neighborhood parades on Mar 17. The South Side Irish Parade will kick off at noon on Western Ave. between 103rd St. & 115th St. The Northwest Side Irish Parade will also kick off at noon, starting at Onahan School on W. Raven St. An after party will follow this parade with a corned beef and cabbage dinner, drinks and live entertainment.

What Else is Happening?

Follow the Downtown parade on Mar 16 and you’ll happen across the St. Patrick’s Festival held at the Irish American Heritage Center. From 1 p.m. to midnight, enjoy traditional and contemporary Irish music, dance, food, drink, activities, Irish vendors and workshops. Tickets to enter the festival are $12+. If you’re feeling the luck of the Irish, then sign up for one of the many marathons and half marathon races also happening in Chicago. The Get Lucky Half Marathon, St. Paddy’s Day 5K & 8K and the Shamrock Shuffle will all take place in March.
